I have found the same with forex, traded demo for 13 months and real time for just over two years before going full time.
But everyone has to start somewhere, while "experience" is great, you don't just take a p*ss in the wind and hope it works when you originally begin. Everyone starts by learning a method, TA or fundamentals and then goes from there.
To maybe re phrase my original post ....
"what method works well for your day trading and how did you learn this method"?
