Options are tradable instrements, exactly the same as the fully paid shares are. They are cheaper to buy as they normally trades at the fully paid share price MINUS the exercise price. So prior to the expiry date, you can buy AND sell at any time.

Converting the options to fully-paids is NOT COMPULSORY. I mostly buy options to sell them for a profit BEFORE the expire date. However if you wish to convert them to fully-paids you can do so at ANY time up to the expire date by paying the exercise price.

As mentioned, the main value of options is the extra leverage you gain for less outlay.
