Recent revelations of snoutism have exposed one of the weaknesses in our selection of candidates.
So what should be done to get quality candidates while preventing snoutism.
I have advocated a massive pay rise for politicians in the past (where they pay all their own expenses).
My idea is that the extra cash would attract a better quality candidate.
The greatest weakness would be that it would not attract any better candidates in the ALP. Instead hardened union bureaucrats would line up to get such higher paying jobs.
So what about the reverse. Reduce their pay to $100k to discourage the opportunists. Such candidates would need to have already been a success. Union bureaucrats would never come across. Shorten, eg, would still be running around shouting at small union meetings and scheming on how to reduce pay rises for members.
We end up back at square one. Any ideas folks?
