Wikipedia provides some useful summary on Malaysian politics.

Malaysia has a multi-party system since the first direct election of the Federal Legislative Council of Malaya in 1955 on a first-past-the-post basis. The ruling party since then has always been the Alliance Party (Malay: Parti Perikatan) coalition and subsequently from 1973 onwards, its successor the Barisan Nasional (National Front) coalition. The Barisan Nasional coalition currently consists of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) and 11 other political parties.

The Judiciary of Malaysia is largely centralized despite Malaysia's federal constitution, heavily influenced by the British Common Law and to a lesser extent Islamic law, and is mostly independent from political interference
(except by the appointment of judges?)

Anwar bin Ibrahim is the leader of the Malaysia oposition coalition. Pakatan Rakyat or PR (English: People's Pact / People's Alliance is an informal Malaysian political coalition. It currently controls four state governments while in opposition to the ruling Barisan Nasional at the federal level.

The political coalition was formed by the People's Justice Party (PKR), Democratic Action Party (DAP), and Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) on April 1, 2008, after the 12th Malaysian general election. They had formed the Barisan Alternatif (Alternative Front) previously in the 10th general election

The Democratic Action Party, or DAP (Malay: Parti Tindakan Demokratik) is a secular, multi-racial, social democratic Malaysian political party.[1]

The DAP is one of the three major opposition parties in Malaysia, along with the PKR and PAS, that are seen as electable alternatives to the Barisan Nasional coalition of parties. It is one of the component parties of Pakatan Rakyat (or known as People's Alliance).

The party's vision is to establish a peaceful and prosperous social democracy that can unite its disparate races and diverse religions and cultures based on a Malaysian Malaysia concept of forging a Malaysian race grounded on universal moral values, offering equal access and opportunity, upholding democratic governance and the rule of law, creating wealth and distributing it equitably and fighting corruption.[2]

Of interest, though its core constituency consists of Malaysian Chinese, the DAP receives support from the Malaysian Indians and Malays. The party's strongholds are the states of Penang, Perak and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

Some opposition by the Chinese and Indians could be a reaction to the preferential treatment afforded to the "bumiputra" or Malay sons of the soil.

    Malaysian politics are not simple.
