"In the past, everything north of the 60th latitude belonged to another world. That's not the true any longer. Now we live in the same world," said Finn Lynge as he opened the three-day seminar.
Aleqa Hammond, Greenland's foreign minister, spoke at the conference, noting the dilemma which Greenland currently finds itself in: on the one hand it has to live up to international conventions and rules about reducing CO2 emissions.
On the other hand, it wants to stimulate the economy by attracting foreign parties interested in investing in mineral and oil research - groups which most likely will not bring down CO2 emissions.
But the industry is quite interested in Greenland's underground resources, Hammond said.
"So it's just a matter of which demands the government will ask investors to meet when we issue permits for mineral research or development of new industries," Hammond said.
Participants separated into working groups and were scheduled to present their results on Tuesday.
