I have invested directly into shares and self-funding installment warrants (SFI). My SFI's are paying a 22% gross yield.
My advice to you:
1.Have a 30 year outlook. Pick companies that will be around in 30 years e.g. RIO, BHP, FMG, CBA etc.
2. If you want to be lazy, dollar cost average.
3. Learn from your mistakes. One of my biggest mistakes was buying at the top of market. Therefore, I learnt a little about charting or technical analysis or charting.
4. Pass the sleep test. If you are not going to sleep at night because you are worried about an investment do not invest.
5. Use gearing. Self-funding installments are a good product for SMSF. There is plenty of info on them on the ASX. However, see point 4.
6. Educate yourself.
Good luck
