Valid and important question, Australia needs a viable and competitive opposition.
2 party system without a strong opposition let's incumbent idealogues in the governing front bench off the leash.
With surety of a 2nd term (at least in their minds) the ALP are very much reformist in remaking Oz in their own image.
Competition at the ballot box keeps the straight jacket on 'the crazies' on every front bench whether red or blue, the viability of the government politically overrides any reformist gender but if no perceived opposition?
Reform is necessary but must be achieved under the threat of competition, a mandate must be won on the basis of an informed public.
ALP have done some good things, initiation of NACC in particular long overdue, but 'selling' of the voice referendum although mandated showed major government management shortcomings (ideology over commonsense resulting in an emotional bleating at the 11th hour).
International student intake to the detriment of our own younger generations in housing have more than a bit of the 'light on the hill' idealogue making the decisions, don't remember the 'big Australia' being debated with the Australian people.
Another consequence of lack of a viable opposition is political arrogance which usually results in political toxicity as the pollies forget they have to answer to the electorate, we will go from an 'anyone but scomo' to an 'anyone but albo' situation. Only loser there will be our nation.
