With respect I think you are getting confused between investing and trading.

Investors are people who are generally looking for a return over the long term. Off course the idea is that when the asset needs to be sold it would be done at a higher price and one that is higher than inflation thereby preserving value.

The idea of buying low and selling high is very much the mantra of a trader who thinks they are smarter than all of us and don't care too much about anything other than themselves You should check out the movie "The Smartest Guys in the Room" for a good example of that.

Statistically speaking there always has to traders who are going to be successful but eventually, and Goldman Sachs in a case in point, they will screw up.
