Will I wouldn't be quite so sure of that! The latest ASIC report on outstanding shorts as you point out, sat at 0.61% or 1.7m shares which is not a high figure at all. However, that is at 21 Jan when TLX was still in its trading halt.
If you look at ASX's reporting of daily shorts this week, the shorting activity has been heavy, particularly yesterday:
- Mon 1.43m shorts on ASX turnover of 7.82m shares (that excludes any ChiX turnover)
- Tue 472k shorts on 2.63m
- Thur 610k shorts on 1.80m
They all represent significant portions of the sells on those three days. What we won't know until ASIC reports the overall shorts on those days is how much short covering was also done on those days ie just playing with the daily movement on this week's volatile market.
