But in seriousness, it's proven placebos do have a positive affect, so if you have a positive mental belief that a mystical sky fairy will save you it could very well be quite beneficial.
The only downside of religions in all of this is some believe they have gods protection and don't care about the science of protecting them selves, plus religious gatherings and traditions can be very good at spreading this thing...
