On a similar tack, I once spent some time over successive days with a really wealthy guy - he was a client. His broker seemed to ring him a lot. One day I was so curious I just had to ask him because I heard him mention Becton. I thought 'well if he's going to take phone calls during my time, I'm not going to worry too much about appearing rude'. His broker said that Becton had just finished an institutional capital raising, but there was some stock still needing to be taken up - at a 15% discount to market. He was asked how much he wanted. How much would you buy if you could guarantee an overnight 15% return....? You'd go big. He didn't get any, he said he wasn't interested - don't know why. Can't imagine a quick 75-100grand overnight wouldn't be appealing to even the ultra-wealthy. I followed the stock the next day/week and there was no drop, the placement wasn't even mentioned in the companies announcements as far as I could see.
