A person's beliefs persist in accordance with their need to believe. So if you believe that plants have feelings but you don't care if they do, it is easy to accept any evidence contrary to your belief.
If someone needs to believe in something such as a belief in an afterlife, any evidence to the contrary is either rejected outright or accommodated somehow to maintain their overall belief.
