The Marantao Prospect has the potential to be 5 times larger than Malampaya, Philippines largest oil and gas field.

SC55 (SW PALAWAN BASIN)

Previous geological studies of the area have identified several prospects and leads (Figure 18). Of note is a very large prospect, the Marantao Reef.

There are similarities between this reef and the Malampaya oil and gas field carbonate build-up, which is the largest producer of condensate and gas in the Philippines, containing approximately 200 million barrels of oil (yet to be developed) and 3.5 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The Marantao Prospect and the other leads in SC55 lie on-trend with the recent giant oil discoveries of Murphy and Shell-Conoco in deep water turbidites immediately to the south-southwest in offshore Borneo.Extensive gravity and magnetic surveys have been carried out and TransAsia has undertaken detailed studies of these data sets together with the existing seismic coverage and nearby wells which aids in understanding the structural history of the area.

SC55 overlies the South West Palawan Basin, which is characterised by extensional tectonics with major northeast to southwest normal faults.

Pre-rift sequences refer to those rocks deposited prior to the Paleocene-Eocene rifting event. Few wells have been drilled into this section. The hydrocarbon charge potential has been investigated on the basis of well and seismic data, the occurrences of oil and gas seeps at sea bottom and the distribution of known oil and gas fields in the region.
