I wonder if you have your own children at this time. Most parents never stop being parents but they realise that their kids will not become truly independent without a nudge sometimes.
After three years away living in Uni accomodation our youngest son has decided to share a house with his mates. Talk about a steep learning curve. Looking at houses,getting references and convincing a Real Estate agent that having four engineering students in one of their rentals is a good idea. He was somewhat surprised that most houses come without fridges and washing machines etc.
As to parents being dumped into a nursing home when they get old. I can say that the kids most likely to dump their parents are the spoilt ones who had everything given to them. The ones that have worked hard and contributed towards their keep respect what their parents have done for them.
