unfortunately polls in the leftist dominated anti-Bush press in the US are just as subject to manipulation, selective sampling and interpretations to drive a leftist agenda as they seem to be in Australia (except of course the leftist dominated press here is both anti-Bush and anti-Howard).
This particular poll has been examined in some detail and found to be grossly unrepresentative.:

S&L’s Gila Monster has pointed out in a comment that while the Washington Post failed to reveal the demographics behind this poll, their partners in crime at ABC did manage to provide a link (pdf file).
And lo and behold, page 7 of the report reveals that this WP/ABC poll over-sampled both blacks and Democrats.
Out of the 1,131 adults polled, 598 called themselves Democrats or Democrat-leaning independents and only 436 identified themselves as Republican or Republican leaning independents.
