20 May 1921 The Age
"The good old pioneers are being called
away.
A gentleman well known in the
Wood's Point district, Mr John Nolan,
died on the 16th inst, at Hawthorn.
Born in Prince Edward's Island, Canada,
86 years ago, Mr. Nolan arrived in Vic-
toria in 1852, and, after joining in the
Buckland and Beechworthgold rushes,
went with a party to the then unknown
Gaffney's Creek and Wood's Point gold
fields.
His first crushing gave the sensational
return of 1,600 ozs.from 40 tons.
He was associated with the Dempsey,
A1, Rose of Denmark and other mines,
and retired from active work fifteen years ago."
