However let me tell you that banks, be it commercial or investment banks are not in the business of investing directly in mining stocks let alone speculative mining stocks.

What they do is to administer private equity funds which may invest in mining and a host of other things and to lend money to these funds. For instance, ING does run ING Private Equity, but the capital at risk does not belong to the bank, it belongs to those that have invested in the fund and curiously enough, the money lent to the fund comes from the National Australia Bank and not from the Ing bank.
