They sell shares that they don't own, and then hope to replace them by buying at a cheaper price (they are betting on the price going down).The difference is their profit.
It has certainly knocked the legs from underneath a few stocks over the past year, but it is legal. It is the big boys who do it at the expense of the MUG PUNTER.
