My grandpa would always give me a special look when we visited which told me that I could go out to his fig tree as the fruits were ripe and they were mine for the taking..... he knew it was me out of the family, who was most happy to gorge on figs. Can't recall the negative consequences but there probably were some.
Then he gave me a paper bag to fill to take home with me. A single fig costs $3.50 in my local fruiterers.
