LUSAKA, 09/19 - The Zambian government said Saturday it supports an initiative proposed by United Nations (UN) agencies for the establishment of a Growth Triangle involving Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Zambia.

Zambian Vice President Nevers Mumba was quoted by the official Zambia News Agency as saying the Growth Triangle would promote social and economic development among the three countries.

He made the remarks at the 43rd anniversary of the death of former UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjoeld, who were killed in an air crash near Ndola in northern Zambia.

The vice president said the Growth Triangle proposed by the UN country team in Zambia will help the African country expand its export base through the use of the Benguela Rail Road, which provides landlocked Zambia the shortest link to the ocean, as well as the shortest trade route to Europe and America.

The three countries involved in the Growth Triangle are rich in copper, cobalt, diamond, oil and other strategic resources.

The copper belt stretching from the DRC to Zambia is one of the biggest copper deposits in the world.

Mumba also welcomed the return of peace to Angola and the DRC, saying it would foster social and economic growth for Zambia and the sub-region.

He appealed to the United Nations to mobilize resources for the rehabilitation of the Benguela Rail Road.
