Not very safe according to acclaimed money manager Stephen Leeb, Chairman of Leeb Capital Management, who gave an example Eric Spott reported about an investor in physical gold who deposited their allocated gold in 2009 in a bank for safe keeping and when they asked to get their gold back there were long delays. Then the gold bars they got back were not the gold that was deposited because they were dated 2011.
