Yes, this event remains the point the craziness we see now could have been stopped. But if people still think planes can convert giant buildings into free falling dust that collapse into their own footprint AND 2 planes can bring down 3 building that all belong to the same guy who then makes separate multi billion dollar claims on insurance, which included provisions for an act of terrorism, that he took out 6 weeks before 9/11, what can you do?
Once they got away with that, they knew they could do what they like for years to come.
