Lots of information missing from that article. The shortage of oil played a big part in Germany's defeat; also the Germans feared the Russians revenge, so fought much harder on the eastern front; the Germans weren't so hostile towards the British and Americans, who were closer to blood brothers. What should be learnt is the problems of waging a war that size today. Sheer logistics would be immense....hence the many small, strategic wars today. However America is limited in how much further it can go without giving something back. The combined size of Russia, China, India and a truculant Europe is too much to take in one bite and would not be wise. A much slower, trade oriented warfare is likely to be seen over the coming decades. The bartering over scarce resources, payment of intellectual property rights, large labour disruptions and accomodating various races and religions, will take up much of the time of politicians.
