When i worked for a gas supplier company years (lifetime) ago, we used to use the pieces of copper wire bent around a piece of pvc pipe exactly as shown above. There was no dial before you dig in those days.
It had about a 50/50 strike rate of identifying underground pipes, it was however 100% correct in identifying overhead powerlines.
