Burglar asks the self- ‘why, if the homeowner is out, are their boots here? Why do I hear no dogs? Where is said blood? What town in almost any western nation would not have come and taken such dogs away immediately?’

Look at your property as if you yourself wish to rob it- at this time of year for example don’t leave your bins out on the street if going on a trip. If possible, ask a family member or friend to come and put the bins out and take them back in the next day- again if possible, ask them to check that your power/water has not been switched off- thieves will do that and then come back a day or so later, if the power/water hasn’t been turned back on? They have a fairly good idea that you’re not staying there. Ask them to check for and collect your mail/newspapers etc.

Leave a crappy little radio going somewhere in the house on a boring A.M chat channel, not too loud but enough to be heard at times outside. Try to be sure you have sensor activated lights outside the house. There are many other things we can do but let’s at least do the basic and free things we can- being broken in to is a lot worse than it might first sound.
