The number of bitcoins is unlimited, as they can be counterfeited. They can also be stolen, trading can be prevented by DDoS and the govt. can close it down at will.
You posted at 11.06 that the current price is AUD130. Price quoted on MtGox now is $122.49 so, as you say, you can lose your money. $7.50 in 20 minutes!
