They try it with a lot of stocks sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but when it works they’ll continue. They pick shares with large retail holdings, and shares that are at their highest price point because these will retrace normally anyway but they can sell into it to drive it well below support and once the retailers start selling that’s where the margins are.
The other thing is the stock of course has to have a large holder that is willing to loan shares, eg State Street.
You can search short holder lists like shortman for example and see many failed attempts in small number to start with, often you’ll see a single day spike in short selling and then nothing after that, they tried and moved on.
In our case with CXO, we flew to close to the sun in November and became a soft target driven by bearish lithium news and falling spod quotations from China CIF markets
