Almost half of Australians have less than a grand in savings, new research from Finder shows.

The comparison website's Consumer Sentiment Tracker found that 45 per cent of respondents - equivalent to 9.4 million people - had less than $1000 to fall back on.

On average, this group had just $210 apiece saved up. That's just over what Finder found Australian households spent on average at the grocery store per week in 2023.
