watso...that's a concerning article...especially the chemical concerns. A staggering 25% of pesticides are used for cotton crops. And the chemicals for dyes and dry cleaning...besides on the environment...leaching onto skin. The landfill waste aspect seems to be the least of our worries.
I also darn my socks! I buy Explorer but even they eventually wear...though they take ages as they're damn strong. The trick to a long life is to keep your nails trimmed. I'm from the school that a plant isn't dead until it's a stick. Likewise for clothes.
A friend uses bamboo socks and swears by them.
