Human rights group to meet UN on torture
Posted 10 hours 7 minutes ago
Australia's treatment of terrorism suspects and asylum seekers will be examined today when a coalition of human rights groups meets United Nations representatives in Switzerland.
The coalition includes the New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties and Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.
Human Rights Law Resource Centre spokesman Phil Lynch says they will report that some parts of Australian law and policy are incompatible with the UN's convention on torture.
"There's a range of areas in Australian law and practice that we consider to fall short of that absolute prohibition and of those positive obligations," he said.
"That's what we'll be giving evidence to the committee in relation too."
