The scenario you paint for Sydney would be terrible IF it ever came about. Look at the price we paid in Bali for our role in liberating East Timor.
So should we have stayed out of East Timor, and should we leave Iraq alone for similar reasons ? These are difficult questions with no easy answers. It really depends on your attitude to the world and whether your view is long term or short term.
