From what I can see I question that short selling is doing anything good for our market or economy other than increasing volatility and robbing retail investors. It doesn't "highlight flaws in company fundamentals" when stock analysts and reporters run trumped up articles designed to scare the market into selling, the market doesn't reflect a companies fundamentals when the share price is manipulated. But it's allowed and so it must be okay. Just shows what a rubbish job the ASX and ASIC are doing. The ASX sells direct feeds into it's computer so that stocks can be front run by the big boys, talk about unethical.
There's a perception that "investors" and "traders" are rich so who cares but the truth is many investors are everyday mums and dads and workers trying to invest their savings. If the banks saving rates were better then many probably wouldn't risk their money on the stock market.

Naked shorting has been banned, but totally agree with your remarks regarding ethics of the big boys. Especially, the part about the everyday mums and dads trying to make it.
