AUSTRALIAN investors were slow to appreciate the healthcare sector, but they were not alone. . . Matt McNamara, chief investment officer at specialist healthcare investment fund IB Managers, says there are "plenty of interesting stories" in the healthcare sector, but investors must be selective.
"There was quite a lot of buzz over, say, stem cells, because we didn't have the same regulatory issues as the US did, and as a result people thought Mesoblast would be a success story and that has certainly been proven. Heartware Int?l. [which makes miniaturised, implantable left ventricular assist devices for the treatment of advanced heart failure], has also proven to be a very robust company..."
John Hester [senior healthcare analyst at LINWAR Securities] says Heartware is an outstanding prospect of joining its device-maker peers. "Heartware has all the credentials to do very well like Cochlear & ResMed have, and we think Nanosonics is another highly promising story.". . .
