in the early 80's I was living in Nth Fitzroy (Melb). One winter night about 1am, there was the noise of a HUGE explosion nearby. I was living in a block of flats overlooking a railway line and a bit of vacant scrubland. Anyhow, I immediately opened the front door and stood on the landing expecting to hear follow up sirens etc, everyone else in the block was also standing outside their front door.... we all sort of looked at each other, nobody said anything to anyone, and we all went back inside. End of story.
there was never any mention of any local incident that might have been the cause of this HUGE noise. Very odd incident. I always meant to have a poke around for evidence of a meteorite having struck somewhere close - but there was no associated light flash so I never got around to it.
