The decision brings to almost 400 the number of jobs that have been axed by major Hunter industry players in recent weeks.

Last Friday rail manufacturer Downer EDI announced it will shed 200 workers from its Cardiff operations.

About 80 full-time employees and 110 contract staff will leave the company because of the completion of its contract to build a 78 eight-carriage Waratah train fleet for the NSW government.

A day earlier, Chain Valley Colliery, owned by LDO Coal and operated by Lake Coal, confirmed it will cut its workforce from 207 to 134 - a loss of 73 jobs.

Last month Hunter engineering and shipbuilding icon Forgacs also flagged closing its Carrington and Tomago facilities, thus shedding about 900 staff, late next year if the federal government cannot guarantee future naval work.

Arrium employs about 1800 in the Hunter, with about one third of them employed at Waratah.
