Back 50+ years back, in the Kalgoorlie gold mines, one had to be with the same employer for 20+ years to earn long service leave. Most back then didnt plan for retirement till it was nearly on them, so you had guys in their 60's still swinging an air-leg machine in stopes deep underground. These guys were very fit from a lifetime of hard work, and hung in till they got their 20 years in, earned their long service leave, put their feet up.....and many died within 6 months.
I remember a union journal of the time mentioning deceased members, giving their service details, date retired, date of death.....didnt used to be very long at all.
The longer you keep actively working the better.
