They feared the site was 'too dangerous' and were told by Iraqi government officials to 'go-away then' or words to that effect.

Maybe while they are there, they could actually do something useful and go work in an Iraqi hospital and help tend those whom are denied medical supplies due to Saddams policy of buying armaments instead of helping his people ...
