gus, another explanation of open up dip:
Geologists talk about geological units in terms of "strike and dip" when referring to their orientation.
Think of it this way:
Take a hard cover book and pretend it is the orebody or mineralisation. Hold the book horizontal.
Tilt it from the horizontal - the dip is the angle of the cover from the horizontal.
The strike is the direction that the spine is travelling. (Can be either one direction (say 10 degrees), or the direction 180degrees in the other direction. (190 degrees)
So, something open up dip means the extent of the mineralisation is not determined up the surface of the book.
Something open down dip - down the surface of the book
Open along strike - mineralisation has not been closed off in either direction of the spine of the book. The strike direction is also usually given.
Does that help?
You can google this stuff and get lots of nice pictures to explain it.
