Billy and Groins,
With trials you always have a drop out rate (death, couldn't be bothered etc). The rate will vary depending on the length of the trial and what your trialing. 100 is still a pretty small sample size so recruiting another 10 or 20 bodies is good insurance to ensure you have at least a 100 people at the end. They also want as much diversity as possible (condition ,age ,ethnicity ,sex ,other medical conditions etc) of people doing the trials.
