What's our partnership with Huntsman all about?

    A few thoughts/items of interest re Huntsman….

    • My guess is that Huntsman supplies the key raw materials needed for Alexicool (polymers/paraffin). As it’s my guess that ICL is the likely supplier of the key raw materials needed for Alexiflam products (phosphorous/nitrogen). (1)

    • Huntsman manufactures and markets Pyrovatex CP, one of two products to have dominated the FR cotton chemistry market for decades. Alexiflam NF is a competitor product in this space. With respect to its plans for Alexiflam NF, Alexium has said that it anticipates licensing its flame retardant for cotton and cotton blends to “three global chemical suppliers” sometime this year. (2)

    • Huntsman operates in five segments, one of which is its Textile Effects division. Pyrovatex CP is sold from within this division. Huntsman’s product offering in textile chemicals “covers process and effect chemicals for the entire wet processing of textiles, such as pretreatment, optical brightener, dyeing and printing processes and finishing effects such as UV-protection, flame retardancy, wrinkle resistance, water and oil repellency, moisture management and enhanced textile comfort”. End-markets include “consumer fashion apparel, sportswear, career and uniform apparel, military, automotive, home and institutional textiles and furnishings, carpet and other functional textiles.” Customers include Adidas, Fruit of the Loom, Hanesbrands, Ikea, Nike, Uniqlo and Tencate. (3, 4)

    • Mid-last year Huntsman announced that it would spin off its Textile Effects division (2016 revenue, $765 m; EBITDA $65m) together with its Pigments and Additives division (2016 revenue, $2.1 bn) into a separately traded public company. Although the relevant documentation for the new company was filed with SEC in October, Huntsman had changed its mind by January, announcing that the spin-off would now exclude the Textile Effects segment, which it had since decided to retain. (3, 4)

    • Huntsman owns patents relating to a PCM material with potential for use in buildings, clothing, automotive interiors and transport containers. (5)
