The Husab mining project, previously known as Rossing South, is set to become the biggest uranium mine in Namibia generating an annual revenue of N$5 billion once production starts in 2014.
With a potential to produce over 15 million pounds per annum of uranium oxide, the mine has the potential to contri-bute 5% to the Namibian GDP, according to Norman Green, chief executive of Swakop Uranium, developers of the Husab mining project.
The value to Namibia as a country is at this stage conservatively calculated with the project expecting to generate N$5 billion from exports per annum, profits contributing 5% to the Namibian GDP, merchandise exports contri-buting 20%,

government adding an additional 20% to their mining royalty coffers and an increase of 20% in terms of employment creation, said Green speaking at information meetings that were held in Windhoek and Swakopmund recently.
Namibian businesses, potential contractors and service providers were invited to the information meetings with the objective to inform them about Swakop Uraniums plans with its proposed Husab mining project, to outline the timeline for construction and to explain the tender requirements and process.
At the same information meetings, Piet Pretorius, manager: projects of Amec, the study contractors for the Husab Project, outlined the execution strategy in terms of major construction contracts, support packages and local labour.
With the construction workforce estimated to be as many as four thousand, we are committed to make maximum use of Namibian labour and are working with the department of labour to establish an available skills base, said Piet.
People who attended the meetings expressed great interest and faith in the project and a gratitude to Swakop Uranium for involving potential partners in the process so early in the project. Delegates said they were looking forward to the partnerships that could be developed between a large organisation such as Swakop Uranium and SMEs providing the sector with unique growth opportunities.
We look forward to being witness to the multiplier effect which we believe will be significant in terms of job creation and business development which this project will bring to Namibia, concluded Norman.
