The fact that the enviro movement is against dams is probably a good reason they would be for pumped hydro storage.
Unlike dams, there is no need for a catchment area or a massive dam wall. The reservoirs required need only be small as they are continuously replenished. Replenishment of the lower reservoir can come from a variety of sources. Desalinated water is one but treated effluent, storm water runoff and natural springs can feed into it as well.
Lower reservoirs can be built or they can utilise existing resources such as abandoned quarries or mines. The power to pump the water to higher ground can come from any renewable source and as I said before, we have them all.
The other plus and no less important, is that power generated to elevate the water to higher ground is emission free.
The stretch of coast between Sydney and Wollongong is ideal for this type of development.
