IMO since you are not all that concerned about the environment long term,
lets look at the economics of cars imported to Aus and their impact our balance of trade.

Aus imports about 90% of our automotive fuels mostly refined but some in crude oil.
That amounts to about $40 Billion P/A ($37.7 Billion in 2022 before the price went up)

We sell about 1.2 million vehicles a year of which 80% are capable of being EVs.

To convert to BEVs this would save the country about $30 billion P/A at least in imported fossil fuels.

On the other side of the equation there's the premium to be paid for the BEV which is about
25% (this is becoming less due to cheaper Chinese BEVs replacing expensive European & Japanese ICE imports)*

So lets assume that there are say 900,000 new ICE imports replaced by 900,000 BEVs P/A
and that on average the price difference per vehicle is say $15K...that amounts to an extra
    $13.5 billion AUD

This means that our trade balance improves by $16.5 billion P/A

    * The US is increasing the import tariffs on Chinese EVs by 100%
and lucky for our motorists, our idiots are not doing ditto!
