The trend has been set in Western economies towards EVs due to successive Governments committing to Net Zero Emissions by 2050 (China 2060)
So, IMO , refining the ICE to that inevitable transition to net zero tailpipe emissions is simply a transitional stage just as Hybrids and PHEVs are.
No one has yet mentioned the fate of 10s of millions of perfectly good ICEs that will be made redundant through Governments' carrot and stick approach (ie subsidise BEVs & super tax ICEs in the form of Rego & increased Petrol/Diesel excise)
IMO this will set a trend of exporting these obsolete ICEs to the 3rd world as 3rd world grows for vehicles; much the same as Japan does today except on steroids! Of course should that be allowed to happen, this would negate the net zero tailpipe emissions in the BEV west if considered globally !
