IMO the biggest objection to EVs is the purchase price; not the fact that they are EVs.
Government and fleet sales are mostly operating leases which include a full maintenance program and guaranteed buy-back price (guaranteed depreciation) of which guaranteed depreciation is the critical variable because of higher initial purchase price and downward pressure on EV pricing due to more Chinese manufacturers (oversupply ) entering the Aus market.
With the two biggest global markets outside China( USA & the EC) bunging crippling import tariffs on Chinese EVs, Aus is likely to benefit with much cheaper Chinese EVs.
Since we dont manufacture cars in Aus, IMO we should be allowed to import used EVs particuluarly from Japan to complement the used domestic supply.
At present we are only allowed to import EV "orphans" with the barrier being that our DOT Canberra Vehicle Safety Standards (ADRs) which doesn't recognise Japanese Safety and Vehicle Security Standards. That's a hangover protectionist measure to protect our local manufacturing prior to 2018.
That's now obsolete since the multinationals closed their Auto Manufacturing in Aus.
NB: We have a FTA with Japan which should apply across the to the importation of used Japanese EVs ; not the "orphans " selected by the Multinationals.
