While in Aus we have seen a lot of carrot to encourage
new vehicle buyers into buying EVs, we have yet to see
the stick...
IE:
-rego as per CO2 emissions
-extra excise of petrol 7 diesel
-restricted access to CBDs by ice vehicles
etc etc etc.
IMO those stick programs will lead to a rapid
depreciation of ICE vehicles simply because
of the high overall cost of ownership.
Given that we import over 90% of our transport fossil fuels,
there is a macro economic (trade) incentive to tansition
to EVs as well as a National Security one given the
current global political turmoil.
So in summary , short term economics of ICE vehicles
is OK but IMO the clock is ticking.
PS: Due to US & EU tariffs on Chinese EV imports, we are likely
to see a raft of new Chinese EVs arriving here over the next year
at comparable ICE prices until such time as Chinese production adjusts.
