EVs are "greener" than ICE vehicles over say a nominal vehicle lifetime of 12 years. and besides there is a major economic benefit benefit in that locally generated electricity replaces $50 Billion/P/A of imported petrol & diesel.
I agree that EV production and operation creates some climate change gases but the argument here in favor of EVs is relative....not absolute
And besides, given that we are virtually reliant on import petrol & diesel, EVs address National Security issues should there be a rapid disruption in the fuel supply chain due to geopolitical conflict.
IMO, National Security is also a major consideration for China going EVs.
