IMO Toyota via its lions share of hybrids over the past 2 decades has contributed more to climate change than any other conventional auto manufacturer (specialist EV manufacturers excluded) That is what has made it the biggest global manufacturer .
Its transition to BEV has been timed based on global demand and economic viability. Conventional Auto manufacturers such as GM & Nissan who led the BEV march with the Volt & the Leaf have struggled have struggled to make either model economically viable and instead lost money on the quest.
Toyota has ontroduced its new model range of BEVs to complement its already formidable line up of HEVs and PHEVs.
From a business point of view the proof of the pudding is in the eating and so it it with auto manufacturing .
The world is slowly but steadily transitioning from ICEs to BEVs & HEVs/PHEVs are merely a necessary transition to that due to shortage/convenience of charging stations and price differences
PS: $271,000 political donation in a country like the USA is pennies. & we dont hear about its donations to green projects let alone a US wide analysis of Toyota's contribution to minimising petrol & Diesel CO2 via its vast range of HEVs /PHEVs
