Sadly, politicians will twist this idea around & instead on making public transport cheaper, they will make owning a car more expensiveAnd in Victoria cash to govt coffers is increasing:

New data, obtained by 9News, shows more than 6000 drivers were snapped within July alone by the detection cameras
Drivers face a $577 fine if they are caught on their phone while driving, along with four demerit points. If you are caught wearing your seatbelt incorrectly, you will receive a $385 fine and another three demerit points.

The rollout of the cameras coincides with new driver distraction road rules which came into effect across the state...
The new rules will extend current mobile phone laws to cover modern technologies like in-built vehicle systems, mounted devices, wearable devices (such as smartwatches) and portable devices (such as tablets).
Just imagine how many daily bus or train trips one could do for $577 or even $385. There are no seat belts on trains, trams or even most buses.
Wearing those smart watches is a smart way to collect revenue but not so smart for a driver as it can add to road trauma - it seems it can also add to the state's revenue.
EV drivers claim to save money by having cheaper 'fill' ups. It appears that it is a lot cheaper to forego car ownership based on all the road rule impositions and enforcements. But of course it's about your safety even as traffic crawls and bottlenecks are common in major centres with ever increasing vehicle registrations - more money to govt and think of all the additional ongoing potential fines and thus more revenue to open the avenue to think of more ways to have further extra safety measures.

Bet you it's probably quicker to walk on Queen st in Brisbane to your inner city destination than driving around trying to find parking - and in attempting to do so, one becomes inattentive by not watching the traffic as much as one looks for parking spots. Walkers, please look out for wayward vehicles.
But as for level playing field - when will EV drivers face fines for using and/or fiddling with onboard computer systems??
