"Ford F150 Lightening, Vivian and Cybertruck are coming soon"
All a tad too big , and expensive, for me. For my single vehicle ambition, not much fun in the city either.
I worry about the imbedded carbon in making them too , vs my very light weight Triton.
On energy efficiency, AEMO's 10% transmission loss , doesn't include the losses that lead up to the electrons leaping out of the generator, ie drilling for the gas and oil and transporting it to the power station. Ditto coal, manufacturing of solar cells , windmills etc .
The efficiency will also be influenced breakup of the percentages of the processes are used to generate those electrons .
Even if they come straight from my roof , there was a ''cost'' attached to the stages before that.
In the end , from a public policy point of view , as opposed to personal pocket and convenience issues, I am interested in the carbon and other pollutant effects.
So , I find myself trying to work out the carbon footprint of fossil fuels , renewables , carbon cost of manufacture as well as ongong usage.
I should fess up that I am not a great fan of electric cars , replacing an inefficient transport system based on an individual driving around in their own little ice car , not improved that much by the same individuals driving around in electric cars. My gut feel is that the ''I am a good person in my electric car effect'' will probably drag quite a few people off public transport. ''Please sir , could I have some more ? [roads that is , not porridge]''.
Putting society's resources into better mass transit systems , modifying cities and modifying lifestyles would have much more effect on carbon , climate , consumption, consumerism [sorry , I love alliteration].
The electric car will just allow people to continue to waste resources , at a slower pace.
Now , I will get an EV pretty soon , but not for altruistic reasons , nor to save money , but mainly because I am a post middle-aged , upper middle class male . and as I am going to keep the Triton it will be a full EV [ looking at the 3 biggies above , I have the feeling 2 smaller vehicles will be cheaper for me , and better for the planet.
Now it wont be a Tesla , because I think Musk is a blight on humanity and anything that supports him would make me even more of a tosser than I am.
A bottom of the line BYD looks like fun.
cheers
